On Thursday, October 6, 2011, HNBA members, and HBA-DC Board Members, Fernando Rivero and Eldy Quintanilla represented HNBA at a reception in honor of the President’s Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanics. The reception took place at the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center. Juan Sepulveda, the Executive Director of the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics, welcomed those in attendance. Also providing remarks were Eduardo Padron, Chair of the President’s Advisory Commission, the Hon. Tom Perez, Assistant Attorney General, U.S. Department of Justice, and Shakira, Member of the President’s Advisory Commission. The Commission, which met earlier in the day, is tasked with advising President Obama and Education Secretary Arne Duncan on improvements to educational opportunities for Hispanics, already the largest minority group in the nation’s public school system with also the lowest overall educational attainment.
